A Fiver For A Future

Picture
The Challenge
The inside of a house in Malawi from about 6.30pm is in complete darkness.

Unless the people can afford kerosene or candles which are both expensive and dangerous the children have no chance  of Secondary School education.

Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world and its way out of poverty is EDUCATION.

With the invention of solar lamps children can study at all times, take exams,
go to college and have a future.

Chivumu School
Chivumu School now has a proper classroom but desks are few and far between. There is no lighting.

Many Malawian teachers want to run study groups outside school hours but are impeded by the lack of lighting. This holds the children back from an education for their future

Kapando School
They will get another classroom this year similar to the one in the background which was built by MEL in 2003. Neither of these schools has electricity in any form.

What is the answer?
Solar lamps! In a country with sunshine for most hours of the day, these are the answer to illuminating the darkness, enabling school children to study both in school-run groups and at home.

The problem is, most children can’t afford them: they’re about £5 each, more than 6 days’ work..if your parents are lucky enough to have a job!
